Don’t you just hate it when this happens…

17 May

I read an article on the weekend and could immediately relate and thought I would share the gist of article with you…

A pensioner spent 8 years working a 5000 piece puzzle only to discover right at the end that there was 1 piece missing!! Now, admittedly, he couldn’t have been working at break neck speed to complete the puzzle, because a bit of simple arithmetic tells me he wasn’t even placing 2 pieces a day…but then maybe there was a lot of one colour (you know…sky, sea etc)

Apparently, he was so devastated on discovering the missing piece, that his family contacted the makers of the puzzle to try and get a replacement piece. Alas, he had taken so long to complete the puzzle, that they had stopped making the puzzle.

Shame, bless…

Fairytale Wedding

12 May

After a weekend of working at the Wedding Festival a few weeks back, I thought I had seen and heard it all…until I spotted this.

Shrek Couple

Honestly, you have GOT to be joking. So, the story here is that they went to see Shrek on their first date and after that, apparently, their friends teased them about looking like Shrek and Princess Fiona (which apparently did not offend them)…so they decided to stage their special day dressed like the fairytale couple.

Just to add some more class to the occasion, the Best Man dressed as Monsieur Hood, the Father of the Bride as Lord Farquaad, Mother of the Bride as Fairy Godmother and the maid of honour as Snow White.

Shrek Wedding Guests

Guests joined in the fairytale theme too.

And they all lived happily every after…THE END.

Vampires set the trend

10 May

Vampires

According to the Most Popular Baby Names of 2009 list, released by Social Security Administraition in the USA, the most popular baby names in the U.S. right now are Isabella and Jacob. As in the Twilight series Isabella Swan and Jacob Black!! And, in keeping with this Vampire trend, the fastest rising baby name in 2009, was Cullen, as in Edward Cullen. Does this concerning interest in the supernatural mean we might need to start being on the look out for people shimmering in the daylight over the next few years??

It seems that, when the supernatural doesn’t inspire, people are looking to the White House for help (is that any better??)…because, the fastest rising name for girls was Maliyah, apparently inspired by first daughter Malia Obama (the Malia spelling also leapt up). Obviously, the Hollywood aspiration can’t be disregarded, as Isla, the Scottish name of actress Isla Fisher, made the second-biggest jump for girls.

Newcomers to the Top 10 List are Mia for girls and Jayden and Noah for boys, with Elizabeth, Christopher, and Matthew falling off. Marley, was a fast faller…perhaps parents have realised that naming your child after a reggae star or a very badly behaved labrador is not a good start to anyone’s life.

The full Top 10 list for 2009 is:

Girls:

1. Isabella
2. Emma
3. Olivia
4. Sophia
5. Ava
6. Emily
7. Madison
8. Abigail
9. Chloe
10. Mia

Boys:

1. Jacob
2. Ethan
3. Michael
4. Alexander
5. William
6. Joshua
7. Daniel
8. Jayden
9. Noah
10. Anthony

I imagine you would have to have more than a passing interest in the supernatural and “the impossible” to believe that a similar list might be available from SA Home Affairs.

Pity. Would be interesting to see our local name trends.

Soccer World Cup Stars

6 May

Vanity Fair Cover

So, we all know that the Soccer World Cup is really just around the corner and we have a LOT to look forward to…but I thought that just in case you needed any more reason to get excited for what is heading to our shores in just over a month from today, this might interest you.

World Cup Pic

The June edition of Vanity Fair features an Annie Liebovitz photo shoot with some of the Soccer World Cup Stars stripped down to…just their flags. The good people at VF were even kind enough to produce a little video clip of the shoots.

So, next time you hear The Blokes discussing Ronaldo or Drogba…maybe you will be able to put a face to a name and even know which country they will be playing for!
